This project addresses the limited opportunities for researchers and supporting staff in the NES domain to learn and practice coding in an accessible, collaborative setting. The project aims to create a national network of Programming Cafes using the CAFE method, providing resources, guidance, and a community-building framework to enhance coding literacy among programmers in research. To achieve these goals, the project will expand the existing CAFE Playbook with strategies for starting and managing cafes, organize roadshow and kickstart events to engage new members, and create reusable session materials to facilitate continuous learning and collaboration.
Projects includes three work packages.
WP1 - Resources
Aims to expand the CAFE Playbook to provide comprehensive resources for starting and managing programming Cafes. WP1 tasks include:
- Develop and curate resources like checklists, templates, and session examples
- Organise collaboration sessions to expand the Playbook and publish it on GitHub
- Advocate for the formalization of the CAFE organiser role
WP2 - Outreach & Implementation
Aims to engage the community to assist new members in setting up Programming Cafes and expand the CAFE network WP2 tasks include:
- Host roadshow and kickstart events to introduce and establish new Programming Cafes
- Facilitate community interactions through online forums and events
- Promote the CAFE method at relevant events and create a Programming Cafe Calendar
WP3 - Session Materials
Aims to develop a framework for creating and maintaining reusable Programming CAFE session materials. WP3 tasks include:
- Establish session formats and guidelines, and create a community repository for materials
- Develop and publish reusable materials for NES domain sessions
- Promote community contributions and maintain the repository, adding relevant sections to the Playbook
